…God cares about how we live.

“I am not going to be taking any chances with hell,” [Rev. James Martin] says. “I believe in that final judgment, and I believe when I see Jesus, I will be asked for an account of my life.”

Not which church I attended or how often, or what prayers I said, but what I did with my life.

There’s been a little squirrel noshing at my sunflower seed. He’s small, the size of a red squirrel or a chipmunk, but he doesn’t look exactly like either one. I wonder whether I have a little visitor?

So, we have been having spring weather all month. The crocuses are blooming.

Friday, the day of the music festival, there was cold weather and snow.

Now it’s spring again. I might have to file a formal complaint.

    Good afternoon, everybody.

Hi, candancie. I guess we do blame each other. I blame him because he is so eccentric – you really have no idea, in spite of my stories. He blames me because anything that goes wrong in his life is my fault, or at least someone’s fault, and I’m usually the nearest.

I did buy frozen veggies for myself. I put them in the freezer in the basement, which is where all our future meals live.

Now, you might think hubby could bring up a package of veggies when he brings up the meat, and the bread, and the fries, and whatever else is down there. Nope.

“You (me) never cook any of that stuff”.

Thursday night I turned up the heat first thing. I actually turned it up a bit too high, which is better than too cold :D

  • 01:18:41 pm on March 5, 2017 | 0 | # |

I think “turn up the heat” is why I got a cold a couple of weeks ago. I forgot that one could adjust the temperature in a hotel room. I fell asleep, and woke up so cold. I think that’s what started it, and being in all the funeral activities with all those people.

  • 01:15:48 pm on March 5, 2017 | 0 | # |

Hubby wasn’t entirely happy with my Hogfather plan. He wanted me to thaw a lamb roast. I can’t face that scenario today.

*I* like vegetables. I could (almost) become a vegetarian. I’ve told hubby that I like “a lot of vegetables” on my plate. So, whatever else we are having for dinner, I get a portion of peas’n'carrots. I am so tired of peas’n'carrots.

  • 01:02:23 pm on March 5, 2017 | 0 | # |

Probably “doesn’t want to make a fuss”. He quietly accepts whatever happens with waitresses, cashiers, merchants, anyone else. It would be unthinkable for him to request anything, like a new sandwich with no mayonnaise, or whatever.

  • 12:51:32 pm on March 5, 2017 | 0 | # |

Yes, I have that notation on my pharmacy account. He uses a different pharmacy and apparently doesn’t know he can request it, or doesn’t think of it, or “doesn’t want to make a fuss”, or whatever.

  • 12:47:44 pm on March 5, 2017 | 0 | # |

I still have to take the last load – towels and undershirts – out of the dryer. I don’t know how long it’ll take. The things seemed very wet when I put them in. There’s been something wrong with the washer for years. *I* would buy a new one, but hubby would complain about the cost, he’d have to learn how to operate the new one, and since he’s satisfied with things as they are it’s Not A Problem.

  • 12:40:06 pm on March 5, 2017 | 0 | # |

I am working on the laundry. I’m sure I’ll get in trouble. The laundry room doesn’t look like it usually does.

Then I’m going out, to the pharmacy to complain about the childproof caps, to the supermarket to buy milk and a new sponge mop, to HogFather to get ribs’n'sides for dinner. I’m going to take the vacuum cleaner with me, so hubby doesn’t “have to do it”.

  • 12:37:54 pm on March 5, 2017 | 0 | # |

I’m not interested in the “context”. That picture was inappropriate.

Conway’s explanation was that she “had to sit like that to take the picture.” Um, what’s wrong with “I couldn’t take a picture because….” ?

Much to my surprise, I was able to successfully reheat his pizza for supper last night, and pour him a glass of Coke. No complaints. I couldn’t believe it.

  • 11:10:15 am on March 5, 2017 | 0 | # |

Now it’s all my fault again. He makes a big pot of coffee every morning, then lets it get cold and zaps a cupful when he wants some.

“Did you turn the coffeemaker off?” and, moaning with pain, he started to get up to go do it himself.

  • 11:07:30 am on March 5, 2017 | 0 | # |

I was planning to go to the pharmacy today and complain about the childproof caps on his meds. He can’t get them open. I tried, and after much struggle was able to get them open. We left them with the caps off.

I read once about a man who died because he couldn’t get the cap off of his nitroglycerine tablets. They found him in the garden. The bottle was in the dirt beside him, with a brick that he’d been using to try to smash it open.

Those childproof caps are nasty. They should be the option that people need to choose, not the default that causes problems for so many elderly and handicapped people.

  • 11:01:55 am on March 5, 2017 | 0 | # |

So, hubby came limping and groaning upstairs – he was in the basement doing the laundry and is complaining that it hurts too much. He “thinks something’s gone wrong”.

    Other options:
ask me to do the laundry
    leave the laundry undone

    Nope. “I can’t do that”.

When he finishes the laundry, he’ll probably try to vacuum. No point in me starting to do it myself. It’s always been true that if he sees me doing something that he approves of, he’ll come and join in. (That’s how the laundry and vacuuming thing started).

    Good morning, everybody.

Even though we base our philosophy course on the data of faith, no one need fear that we shall confine our teaching within narrow and unscientific boundaries. No, we wish to accept science without prejudice and in a manner adapted to the needs of our times. We do not want our students to be ignorant of anything they should know….

Hi, candancie. I don’t know how hubby is feeling. OK, I guess, because he’s back to his normal tetchy self. I asked him a while ago if he wanted a pill, and he said he’d just taken a Motrin.

The surgeon prescribed oxycodone, but he says he took one once and threw up, so he won’t take them any more. Except last night, when he was apparently desperate enough to do it. It stayed down OK as far as I know.

I’ve seen elaborate bunkers that will shelter x number of residents for 3, 5, x number of years. What’s wrong with this plan?

When their supplies eventually run out, they will have to emerge from their underground cocoon. They will encounter the people who have survived the disaster on the surface. The survivors of the survivors. The toughest of the survivors, while the underground people have been watching videos in comfort.

    What’s wrong with this statement?

You’ll learn how Native Americans build the subterranean roundhouse,an underground house that today will serve you as a storm shelter, a perfectly camouflaged hideout, or a bunker. It can easily shelter three to four families, so how will you feel if, when all hell breaks loose, you’ll be able to call all your loved ones and offer them guidance and shelter? Besides that, the subterranean roundhouse makes an awesome root cellar where you can keep all your food and water reserves year-round

I think there should be a rule against basketball players swinging triumphantly from the hoop. The game wasn’t intended to be like that.

Same thing with the football players who do those victory dances, or the soccer players who slide across the pitch on their knees. Showoffs.

When I came home last night there was a rolling trashcan in the driveway. I thought the garbagemen had left it there and no one brought it in.

It wasn’t ours. Brother had brought ours back to the house. The one in the driveway was just visiting. I figured the owner would come and claim it, but it was still there when I collected our mail just now. I moved it from the driveway onto the lawn where it’s not in the way. I wonder how long it’ll stay there?

  • 04:23:03 pm on March 4, 2017 | 0 | # |

I got up to let the cat in, again. I saw hubby’s opened mail on the table. The thumb drive is advertising for some engineering company.

  • 04:21:10 pm on March 4, 2017 | 0 | # |

They’re showing a replay of the golfer in the bushes. In he goes….

  • 04:03:27 pm on March 4, 2017 | 0 | # |

Hubby’s watching a golf tournament. At the side of the course is a hedgerow. In the hedgerow, barely visible, is a golfer, with his club sticking out through the bushes. The ball is a few inches out in the open. He’s been trying to figure it out for quite a while.

We’re wondering why he doesn’t just take a penalty stroke. There’s no way he could get any aim or distance, shoving it out through the bushes.

Now they’re discussing the ball. A couple of people who I guess are officials are picking the ball up and moving it slightly.

Now he did have at least a bit of room to stand with his back to the bushes and make his shot. All the fun is over :D

  • 03:50:16 pm on March 4, 2017 | 0 | # |

Yeah, thumb drives. My guess is that you stick it into an open slot, go to Control Panel or somewhere and select that drive.

I could figure it out if I had to, but I don’t have to. “I don’t know how to do that” works wonders :D

They have one of the more unusual band rooms at that school. It’s not in the school. It’s up under the eaves of the gym building, reached by a staircase of unfinished wood and divided in the middle by a big metal roof support. Also, small.

They do do the best they can. It’s a private Christian school that doesn’t have much money.

  • 03:42:53 pm on March 4, 2017 | 0 | # |

That school is very accommodating and helpful, coping with an invasion of music students, teachers, chaperones, and parents all day and evening. I didn’t see any of their own students. I think they declared it an inservice day or something and all the kids got to stay home.

  • 03:40:28 pm on March 4, 2017 | 0 | # |

One of the reasons I was dreading the music festival is that it is held in the gymnasium of a school. This gym is in a separate building a short distance from the actual school. The problem is that it is built on a steep slope, so the entrance is at the top of the seating area. There is a longer-than-standard flight of steps leading down to the gym floor. Oh, did I mention that the restrooms are also at the top?

I can still walk just fine, but I’m having increasing trouble with steps. So, it was haul myself up by the handrail, hold on going back down, haul myself up again….

I did notice that the festival chairman, who admittedly has a much more complicated job than mine, was also having trouble climbing the stairs. Ah, for our old venue, which was much more convenient. I also think there was an elevator, which I didn’t have to use back then.

  • 03:35:04 pm on March 4, 2017 | 0 | # |

There was a letter with the thumb drive. Hubby only brought me the thumb drive. I told him I didn’t know how to use it. He said, “Ah, never mind.” So, I don’t have to worry about it any more.

hi, candancie. I’m sorry your recovery isn’t going as well as you expected. It sounds like you’re having a hard time.

Carrying stuff while staggering: shoulder purse, slung around my neck and down my right side. Lunch bag, slung around my neck and down the front. Overnight suitcase, with wheels and an extendable handle. Lightweight tote bag with my music in it. So, not actually carrying anything. Wearing two of them, pulling the suitcase.

  • 03:22:26 pm on March 4, 2017 | 0 | # |

So, hubby just came to me with a little thingy and said, “Do you know what this is?”

It’s a thumb drive. Yes, I know what it is, but I’ve never used a thumb drive. He said it came in the mail. I’m not sure whether there’s anything on it or what it is. He said something about specifications, but he’s even more clueless than I am, and not willing to discuss the subject.

Hi, candancie. I am recovering. Next week, only the usual panics, not the everything-at-once that happened this week.

I still don’t know how many new trumpet students I have.

I staggered into the house last night, carrying everything that was essential for last night and this morning. All the other stuff is still in my van. I guess sometime I’ll have to dig in and empty it. Fortunately it’s the other van, so no hurry.

There was some coffee left over in the carafe. I saved it, and hubby zapped that for his morning quaff. So, I don’t know yet what he’ll think of my effort :D

Good evening, everybody. Sorry I was MIA last night. I took my laptop with me, but I was too tired to turn it on.

Hi, candancie. Yes, I remembered to take my music, and everything else I needed.

The only problem is that my gps died. I think I killed it. It turns on and says GARMIN but then it just sits there. Unfortunately, when that happened I was halfway between here and there and I didn’t know the way.

Time for the OldFashioned way. When I got near the motel where I planned to spend Thursday night, I phoned the motel. She gave me the wrong directions but then corrected herself. I got there.

Then, how to get to the music festival? I used the hotel business center to get directions. Actually I would have been OK. The right way was the way I thought I remembered. I didn’t have to print it out.

  • 10:01:50 pm on March 1, 2017 | 0 | # |

Good evening, everybody. Tomorrow morning starts the Really Big Job. I have to get everything organized in time to get to teaching at 2 p.m. Several miscellaneous students, and then the Big Trumpet Class in the evening. Last week I had 6 of them. I expect more tomorrow. Good luck with that ;)

I have all the stuff I will need at the music festival on Friday. Well, sort of. I should pack an overnight suitcase, because I will probably get a motel room. I haven’t made a reservation this year. If I can’t get a room, or if I just decide not to, I’ll spend a few hours sleeping in my car.

I also made a “honey-do” list for my brother. I must remember to leave it for him. I’m not going to think about hubby and brother, together alone in the house all day. They are like chalk and cheese.

I am going to make another try at getting a Codfather. That Codfather makes 3 meals. I must remember to take an extra hoagie bun, for the other half of the cod.

The only thing that is NOT in my van, that I really really need, is my music. It’s in a tote bag, hanging on the doorknob. Will I remember to take it off the doorknob?

What time is it? My computer says 1:19, my watch says 1:22, the wall clock says 1:25.

As soon as I finish my lunch I think I will get going. The music store called, my order is in. Maybe I’ll have time to do that.

No, the other band members do not have to print it, because they carry it right in their pockets with all the other stuff on their phone. My laptop is too big to fit into my pocket, so I need a hard copy. I guess I could get my pencil and paper and do it the real old-fashioned way.

…and on the other topic, no, I did not try calling his phone from my cellphone. I am going to leave that problem strictly alone – it’s his phone, his problem, until he gives me a direct order to go deal with it.

Lunch – a big piece of artisanal Italian bread, a chunk of smoked cheddar cheese, a banana and a glass of orange juice. I don’t usually eat cheese, but this came in a Harry and David Christmas box from one of his clients. He won’t eat smoked cheese, so it was up to me. I’ve nearly finished it.

The phone involved is our landline, which was “my phone number” for many years, until hubby gave up his office and moved into our basement. Then it started ringing incessantly, always for him. Now I let the answering machine deal with it, and I don’t answer that phone even if I’m sitting right next to it.

  • 01:05:12 pm on March 1, 2017 | 0 | # |

I dunno, about the answering machine. The phone did seem to be ringing quite a lot this morning. Maybe that woman wasn’t the only one having trouble.

Speaking of that community band, there’s a performance schedule on our website. I’m trying to print it out, since I use a real computer and not a little pocket-sized smartphone. I cannot get it to print.

Hey, damian – do you know how I can print a paper copy of this?

The community band (clarinet band :D ) is starting to rehearse Officer Krupke. It’s fun. The percussion section gets to do a siren and a police whistle and maybe some other things.

  • 12:35:44 pm on March 1, 2017 | 0 | # |

…and yes, it is an answering “machine”and not an answering “service”or whatever everyone else uses these days. We are in the Dark Ages here.

  • 12:34:28 pm on March 1, 2017 | 0 | # |

No, I get to put the message on the answering machine, and figure out what’s wrong when it goes wrong.

  • 12:11:46 pm on March 1, 2017 | 0 | # |

Well, one of hubby’s e-mails says “I attempted to call you but your answering service did not allow me to leave a message.”

I guess I’ll have another job, as soon as hubby reads that ;)

When it’s the garden off-season I kind of get backed up with gas-in-cans, and then I put it into my car. Did that last week, but then I didn’t do enough driving to use it up.

I’m not going to go driving up and down the road just to get rid of it :D

  • 11:27:47 am on March 1, 2017 | 0 | # |

Hi, candancie and all – I too am getting that Bad Gateway message. I thought it was just my overloaded computer, but now the upstairs computer is having it too.

I have to wash my hair and print out FOUR “important” e-mails for hubby. I’ll be back in, oh, maybe half an hour.

    LOL!

I’ve been reading an article from the Guardian newspaper. At the end, it gives the contact “@gdnlongread”. Now, obviously gdn means Guardian, but in my mind it says “goddam long read”, which it certainly is :D

hi, candancie. The gas cans are to hold the extra gas. I’m entitled to 30 gallons. If I get less, I get less discount. What’s better, 50cents off of 13 gallons or 50cents off of 30 gallons?

Besides, we need gas for our various yard’n'garden equipment.

Good evening, everybody. I’m home from another busy day. I got my 30 gallons of gas, on the last day. I barely had room for it. My car only took 13 gallons. The rest went into a motley assortment of gas cans.

I’m done for today, except for dinner. Tomorrow, another busy day. I’ll be so glad when this week is over.

Hi, folks. I have 20 minutes or so before I have to leave for band. I would really like to not go. I’m thinking about quitting in a few months. I don’t enjoy it any more.

  • 04:45:26 pm on February 27, 2017 | 0 | # |

Good afternoon, everybody. After 4 hours of doing errands’n'stuff, I am pooped. I get a bit of a rest before dinner and band.

Hubby is complaining that his hernia hurts. He does not have the same approach to being unwell that I have. *I* would be lying on the sofa, all day long, doing nothing at all. I’d tell everyone that I was too sick to do whatever it was, and let life go on without me.

Hubby just grits his teeth and carries on. “I can’t rest, I don’t have time.”

Actually, years before that I worked at a different orchard as a picker. I came late in the morning, picked a few apples, then lay down in the shade for a nap. I only worked one day. The next day I didn’t bother going.

    Different culture, different attitudes.

  • 12:47:20 pm on February 27, 2017 | 0 | # |

Years ago I worked at harvest time at a local commercial orchard. The owner hired migrants to do the field work of picking and hauling, but Americans (me) on the assembly line. (How do you think those apples in plastic bags got into their bags?)

Anyway, he said that Mexicans were outstanding doing piecework. You couldn’t touch them for production. But put them on hourly wage in the warehouse and you couldn’t get any work out of them. Work, don’t work, same pay. It’s a no-brainer.

  • 12:43:47 pm on February 27, 2017 | 0 | # |

I see that the U.S. is heading for a major food shortage. Trump is deporting all the illegals, many of whom work in agriculture as field hands.

So, that’ll open up a lot of jobs for unemployed Americans, yes? No. Americans won’t do those jobs. Farmers who have tried it have had endless problems. We’ll have to import all our food from Mexico. But, wait….

Another possible option is raising the wages of American field hands to where they WILL do that work. How much would they have to pay you to stand out in the sun doing stoop labor all day? Not me, I ain’t gonna do it no matter how much you pay me. There are easier ways to get by.

We’re poor little lambs who have lost our way…

I’m back, but it’s OK. I am eating lunch – a peanut butter and raisin sandwich, eaten out of hand, and a glass of orange juice.

A while back one of the fast-food chains came out with “Baconator fries” which were topped with cheese and bacon. The commercials looked so tempting that I actually went and bought some.

Once. They were delicious, but I nearly died of artery-clogging right there on the spot.

  • 12:04:40 pm on February 27, 2017 | 0 | # |

At least I get regular hamburgers, not Big Macs, and I skip the fries. There is no nutrition in fries. They are just little sponges soaked in fat and covered in salt. Yum.

Thaw something. IMO, restaurant food is not healthful, even if you choose carefully. (Says the lady who buys lunch from McDonald’s drive-thru) :D

I have some other errands that involve some driving. This is good because I’m trying to use up all my gas before the end of the month which is tomorrow, unless this is a leap year?

I think I’ll be OK. Tomorrow I have to make a long drive to tuba band, and I can go get gas in the evening. With gas cans.

I gave my security company my new card number, paid my bill, and took care of a couple of other little problems.

When I was experimenting with gluten-free, I discovered a product called Hol-Grain Gravy Thickener which is a miracle for gravy making, much easier and better than flour which I have always used. I worried about running out, so this morning I bought a six-pak on Amazon. Of course, that will eventually run out too. Maybe I should buy a pallet.

Hi, candancie. EVERYTHING? It’d take me years to tell you everything.

I have a lot of Jobs to do today. I procrastinated all weekend, but shove is coming to push very soon now. I am going to do some things this afternoon.

    Yes, I am.

  • 09:23:31 pm on February 26, 2017 | 0 | # |

Hi, candancie. Apparently she passed it off onto him. I don’t know why. The stated reason is that he is used to getting up early.

Hi, lighterlady. I’m over my cold. I just have too many things to do and not enough time to do them. All stressful things.

candancie – I am so glad it’ll be my brother and not me managing hubby. He saves all his Stuff for me. Everyone else thinks he’s great.

I’m preparing a To Do List for my brother. He’s handy at a lot of things, and it’ll be boring for him, sitting here all day. Hubby will either be sleeping or watching TV and won’t want to talk.
