candancie – I was worried about you. I didn’t think you’d just walk out without any notice. I’m devastated that you won’t be coming in any more. I thought of you as a friend and believed that you thought the same about me.

Good morning, everybody. Today’s topic is dogs, specifically lurchers. My internet wandering led me to Blue Cross, a British pet rescue organization. Their website showed the dogs available for adoption. Many of them were Staffordshire Bull Terriers, which is the fancy name for pitbulls, but there was an equally large number of lurchers. Most of the dogs in their shelter(s) were one of these two breeds. I’ve only rarely heard of lurchers in the U.S.

Well, we finally did get snow – a light dusting of flakes. It’s been going on all morning but the ground isn’t covered yet.

Connecticut Gov. Dannel Malloy even had some suggestions on how to pass the time.

It’s a “good day to make brownies,” Malloy said, according to the AP, “and/or read a book.”

  • 09:20:36 am on March 14, 2017 | 0 | # |

Good morning, everybody. No snow yet. None at all.

  • 08:48:38 am on March 13, 2017 | 0 | # |

Good morning, everybody. I just checked the snowblower. The gas tank is empty. Zilch. Nada. This is good. I can fill it with fresh gas and be on my way. I hope.

They haven’t yet cancelled the weather advisory. 4-6 inches, tonight.

  • 07:59:33 pm on March 12, 2017 | 0 | # |

So now he’s come up with the solution:

If it doesn’t start, I can put it in my van, take it to the repair shop, and they can fix it immediately.

    What’s wrong with this picture?

  • 07:46:43 pm on March 12, 2017 | 0 | # |

I said to hubby, “At least if the snowblower doesn’t start I will have all day Tuesday to get it cleared.”

He said, “I’m just scared of shoveling.”
I said, “I didn’t ask you to shovel. I forbid you to shovel.”
    He said, “Yeah, right.”

I don’t know why I even try. He WILL NOT, CAN NOT let me do it alone :(

  • 07:04:43 pm on March 12, 2017 | 0 | # |

Good evening, everybody. Looks like my homestay will be a couple days longer. We are expecting 4-6 inches of snow. Concentrated Winter. I am not going out until Wednesday.

    I hope the snowblower starts.

I tried the Français but gave up at the 3rd question. I don’t know any of those words.

I guess I won’t bother with the Español.

Hi, candancie. Are you sorry you turned me on to these quizzes? :D

  • 01:04:10 pm on March 12, 2017 | 0 | # |

I’m going to try the World Geography Test. I wonder whether I can get all the countries into the right continents?

  • 01:01:36 pm on March 12, 2017 | 0 | # |

Which is closer to Earth, Venus or Mars? I guessed Venus. No one plans to go there though, because it’s too hot.

  • 01:00:45 pm on March 12, 2017 | 0 | # |

…but only 87 on the Elementary School Test. Top 10%, but….

I betcha a lot of elementary students couldn’t pass that test either. It’s HARD. You have to do math.

  • 12:53:03 pm on March 12, 2017 | 0 | # |

…and on the grammar test, I am a Language God! Top 0.01%

Your English level has reached extraordinary heights. No one can compete with you.

Hah! I bet candancie can :)

  • 12:42:41 pm on March 12, 2017 | 0 | # |

And now I tried the British English version. I got 75%. “You are British but you have a lot of American friends.” Well, no, it’s the other way around :D

  • 12:35:37 pm on March 12, 2017 | 0 | # |

hi, candancie. I finally had time to try that vocabulary quiz. I got Top 0.12%

Is that good? You kind of challenged me. What did you get?

  • 12:12:10 pm on March 12, 2017 | 0 | # |

Good afternoon, everybody. It’s going to be a quiet day. I can’t go anywhere because of my windshield, and anyway it’s cold out. We are having concentrated winter here.

I’m tempted to agree with the computer, although I dunno how the wall clock got clued in.

  • 09:32:43 am on March 12, 2017 | 0 | # |

Good morning, everybody. What time is it? My computer and the wall clock say 9:30. My watch and my cellphone say 8:30. Hubby got up briefly and went back to bed.

  • 10:04:03 pm on March 11, 2017 | 0 | # |

We’re going to bed. Nitey-nite. Don’t forget it will be an hour later when you get up.

  • 08:50:45 pm on March 11, 2017 | 0 | # |

Hubby’s watching America: Facts vs Fiction again. I hate that program. He knows I hate it. He watches it anyway.

  • 08:28:12 pm on March 11, 2017 | 0 | # |

Good evening, everybody. We’re back from the Chinese buffet. “We paid” for the meals of the 4 Hispanic men sitting across from us. It’s all you can eat, same price. We ate a small amount. Their plates were heaped up to an amazing height. I wondered whether they only ate 1 meal a day.

They were dressed in rough, outdoor clothing and big heavy boots. I feel sorry for anyone who has to work outdoors today. We’re having our entire winter in about 1 week. COLD!!

  • 02:49:45 pm on March 11, 2017 | 0 | # |

OK, I am no longer hungry. I didn’t have last night’s pork shank and garlic mashed potatoes. I had the last of the Hogfather ribs and fried sweet potatoes, and some leftover spinach. I zapped it, but not long enough. The spinach was cold.

Hubby would have gone hungry rather than eat that stuff. I’ve read that after 3 days without food a man will eat anything. He wouldn’t get the chance. *I* would have eaten it on the first day :D

  • 02:23:34 pm on March 11, 2017 | 0 | # |

Hubby’s suggested Chinese for dinner. Good. I like Chinese, and there will be no TV and no dishes to clean up. Meanwhile I will eat my last-night’s leftovers.

  • 02:21:46 pm on March 11, 2017 | 0 | # |

Of course, if the policemen get fired, who is going to replace them? This is a small rural municipality that undoubtedly pays small salaries to whoever they can get.

  • 02:20:25 pm on March 11, 2017 | 0 | # |

I hope those police get fired, but not the lawsuit thing. It would come back onto the township – MY township – that would have to pay the price.

  • 02:10:04 pm on March 11, 2017 | 0 | # |

Yes, the chicken lady is the daughter. I’ve decided to mention the problem to the mother when I get a good opportunity, which might not be for a while because we are spread out in this “neighborhood” and no one spends much time in their front yard.

  • 02:08:37 pm on March 11, 2017 | 0 | # |

Our little local police department made the news the other night. A woman called 911 because her husband was having an epileptic seizure. Police as well as the ambulance responded. Shouting “What’s he on? What did he take?” they administered Narcan, tased him several times and cuffed him behind his back.

    “He was ‘combative’ “.

  • 02:01:28 pm on March 11, 2017 | 0 | # |

I found out who she is. Unfortunately, she’s the daughter of another neighbor who has always been a good friend. I haven’t decided what to do about that situation.

  • 01:59:58 pm on March 11, 2017 | 0 | # |

Yes, the chicken lady. She lives on the road that is the direct route from our house to many/most of the places I go.

Following the policeman’s recommendation, I have been avoiding her. I only go that way after dark when presumably she wouldn’t know it was me. Twice I forgot. Both times she happened to be outside and saw me. Erk.

  • 01:57:23 pm on March 11, 2017 | 0 | # |

Long-Tail Squirrel is outside enjoying his snack. Katie is going frantic, but hasn’t gone out to chase him. Hunting at the window is more fun :D

  • 01:56:09 pm on March 11, 2017 | 0 | # |

As for the crunch boats, the worst outcome would be that they continue living on the boat.

At English Harbour on the island of Antigua there is a big marina of boat people. I don’t know who they are or why they are there.

  • 01:53:19 pm on March 11, 2017 | 0 | # |

No, no further incidents, but I am still taking precautions. It’s very inconvenient, having to make that long detour every time I go out.

…and stressful, not even knowing who they are.

  • 01:48:13 pm on March 11, 2017 | 0 | # |

I’ve found out that I have enemies. Real-life actual enemies here in my neighborhood. I always felt so safe and friendly before :(

  • 01:45:53 pm on March 11, 2017 | 0 | # |

…and now soccer. I guess I’m in for some channel-surfing.

  • 01:44:27 pm on March 11, 2017 | 0 | # |

Well, hubby just finished watching the end of The Enemy Below. Now it’s the Spanish Civil War.

  • 01:39:03 pm on March 11, 2017 | 0 | # |

Yes, by you. I’ve known it for a long time. It just seemed like the right time to say it, or at least not the wrong time.

  • 01:24:05 pm on March 11, 2017 | 0 | # |

The reason Pam never comes here any more is because she was so hurt by being unfriended.

  • 01:15:24 pm on March 11, 2017 | 0 | # |

I’ve read that in South Africa before the “revolution”, boat-owning was very popular with wealthy and middle-class whites. They invested all of their time and money in buying big “crunch boats”.

When the crunch comes, you can escape on the boat.
Then you can live on the boat while you look for a place to settle.
Then you can sell the boat to get money for a fresh start.

  • 01:08:32 pm on March 11, 2017 | 0 | # |

No, I do understand that some people get great pleasure in going down to the river and sitting on their boat all day, drinking beer and chatting. Whatever. They would not understand the symphony.

  • 01:07:20 pm on March 11, 2017 | 0 | # |

I’ve said this before, that in spite of being chronologically in, or at least very near, the Baby Boomer period, I myself am a staunch Traditional. I think it’s because of being raised by older parents who instilled the Traditional values.

  • 12:59:36 pm on March 11, 2017 | 0 | # |

[Let them eat cake] was said 100 years before her by Marie-Thérèse, the wife of Louis XIV. It was a callous and ignorant statement and she, Marie Antoinette, was neither.

The owner of my body shop explained his financial philosophy to me: buy that boat now (why would anyone want to buy a boat?) instead of saving for retirement, because by then he’ll be too old to enjoy it.

  • 12:44:07 pm on March 11, 2017 | 0 | # |

That link I posted last night, about the book A Generation of Sociopaths basically says what I have thought myself for some time. It’s the ME Generation.

  • 12:41:53 pm on March 11, 2017 | 0 | # |

OK, I’ll try it, although Old-Timers’ Disease is eating into my vocabulary.

    Not now, though. Later.

  • 12:36:42 pm on March 11, 2017 | 0 | # |

The trouble is, I can’t decide which is more urgent: getting Democratic control of the US and state congresses, or supporting the environmental nonprofits that are getting their government money cut off.

  • 12:35:25 pm on March 11, 2017 | 0 | # |

Not only do they sell their lists to each other, they make their own new lists. “Oh, she gave us money. Maybe she’ll give us some more!”

Geeze. I decided to walk the walk by making a couple of political donations. Big mistake. Apparently they all sell their mailing lists to each other.

He’s fine. I think maybe a bit of residual discomfort, but Katie is allowed to sit on his lap again.

I hadn’t set a firm date until last Monday at rehearsal. I sat there stressed and hating to be there, then realized that I could quit now instead of waiting until a “stopping point” at the beginning or end of the summer.

Hi, candancie. Yes, I am going to quit the band. I’ve had it in mind for months, actually years, but I finally realized that I don’t have to wait for a particular date to be allowed to leave. I can do it now.

  • 11:56:20 am on March 11, 2017 | 0 | # |

There. Jobs done. I made the insurance report on my cracked windshield and now they’re going to take care of me.

I put out some sunflower seed for the afternoon squirrels, and mixed seed on the ground for the turkeys.

I have my remaining band music here to put into alphabetical order for turning in.

  • 09:17:47 am on March 11, 2017 | 0 | # |

Well, heck. I coulda been here ten minutes ago.

    Good morning, everybody.

I am sure that I have at least two little red squirrels. One has a long tail that curves up to his head, the other has a short, chipmunk-length tail. He is definitely not a chipmunk. I think he must have had an unfortunate encounter with a cat :D

  • 12:07:16 am on March 11, 2017 | 0 | # |

    Good evening, everybody.

Actually, not so good. I have a cracked windshield. A big chunk of icy snow flew off the roof of a U-Haul right in front of me. Fortunately the windshield didn’t actually break, just cracked in a pretty sunburst pattern right behind the rearview mirror. I didn’t even realize it was cracked at first.

…and yes, I got his license number.

I’ve heard about the “Can I touch your hair?” problem. Well, NO. Just NO.

  • 02:39:31 pm on March 10, 2017 | 0 | # |

What some people have to put up with:

…in line to get lunch today someone’s baby grabbed all up in my hair. That, I didn’t have anything other than the (should be) obvious problem (teach your brats not to grab people!) with, but then the (white) baby’s mother says “that’s right baby, isn’t it soft?” Not “oh, I’m so sorry, let me get him away from your hair, he wasn’t sticky or anything” not “I’m so sorry, I’ll get him to let go” not even “could we go first so he doesn’t do that again” but “isn’t it soft?” …

I can’t believe it, but yes, I can believe it. Some people are just Jerks.

  • 02:28:33 pm on March 10, 2017 | 0 | # |

Hee-hee. A squirrel – one of the big fox squirrels – just came right up to the window and put his paws on the glass. Katie was about 2 inches away, on the other side.

    Neener, neener, neener :D

  • 12:26:08 pm on March 10, 2017 | 0 | # |

I drove home yesterday behind a car that had anti-Clinton stickers all over the back end. Not one sticker, not two stickers, at least 6 or 8. That guy’s in for a big disappointment, when T doesn’t Make America White Again and bring back all the jobs.

My understanding is that all plants are toxic, just some more than others, and/or for some people.

If you eliminate the crucifers and the solaniceae, there won’t be much left.

No, no new appliances, except that I’ve been hearing a weird noise from the basement. Sounds like a helicopter overhead except it’s under my feet. Where the furnace is….

No, I’m not spending MY money on a new furnace. Household expenses, he pays for those. I will say, one of his good points is that he is very generous with his money, to what I think is an extreme. If he asks me to mail a letter for him, he gives me a dollar for the postage.

The snow is still there and still very pretty, but it’s starting to melt. Our outside thermometer says 36, but it’s right next to the house and the big patio window, so maybe a couple of degrees warmer.

I still say, I’m loving this winter. No complaints at all.

That phone-calling WAS very difficult and confusing for him, but I made him do it so maybe he’d pay attention.

Never give your personal or financial information to someone who calls you. See, he’s old-school, where your word or your handshake was a commitment.

  • 11:25:47 am on March 10, 2017 | 0 | # |

Hi, candancie. I don’t think he’ll “appreciate” it. He’ll think I have – for once – done what he wanted. Usually I “only care about myself”.

  • 11:24:09 am on March 10, 2017 | 0 | # |

Me, I try not to have any morning appointments, but sometimes it can’t be avoided. If I’m going out, it’s usually afternoon. Every Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday.

Monday and Friday are kept open for occasional or unexpected appointments.

Hi, candancie. So, what’s your new PT schedule, so I know when you definitely won’t be here?

  • 11:19:35 am on March 10, 2017 | 0 | # |

There! Did it! It took a long time, I was on hold repeatedly and spoke to 3 different CS people, but hubby is going to get his money back.

I hope he paid attention and won’t do it again.

  • 10:23:23 am on March 10, 2017 | 0 | # |

I have to go make a phone call to our credit card company, maybe get our money back from that scam.

I left it to hubby, because he’s the one who did it, but when he tried he couldn’t get through the automatic system and speak to a person. He got frustrated and left it to me.

That’s the rule around here. If he doesn’t want to do it, it’s my job. See you, soon or later.

Yesterday, shopping with no coat on.
    Today, 2 inches of snow.

It’s not very cold though. Snow will probably melt, and it has already melted on the pavements.

I called hubby to tell him I’d be home for dinner. He said to stop at the supermarket and buy myself a small steak. I didn’t. I bought kale salad with yams and fruit, and ate it with a piece of cornbread left over from Hogfather. Hubby had a hamburger, fried potatoes and salad.

Good evening, everybody. I’m early, for a Thursday. Music lessons were cancelled today, because it’s Food Bank day at the SA and the room where I teach was full of food. I’m happy to have a day off, but I wish they’d told me before I made that 1-hour drive.

I got to drive home by the scenic route. Much more fun and interesting than the interstate, but no fun at night.

The officer who was handling the case said she had mental problems and was going to go to therapy. I said, “I have mental problems too, but if I did what she did I’d expect to go to jail.”

I had a few store charge cards. *My* purse was stolen once – my fault – and the thief tried a few things. First, a purchase at Sears. She ran when the cashier picked up the phone to verify the charge.

Then, my bank account. She took my checkbook and my driver’s license as identification. I closed the account immediately. I got irate phone calls from merchants all over town. No one had bothered to look at the picture on the license. She looked nothing at all like me.

Turned out that she was the wife of a policeman. The Blue Wall….

I don’t know when my first student will come today. I got a phone call which was garbled and unintelligible. Something about someone quitting their lessons. I couldn’t make it out. I decided to just wait and see who doesn’t show up. I have two primary candidates in mind. If it’s either of them, that’s a shame. They both seemed interested and reliable.

But he PROMISED he wouldn’t show it to anyone!

That’s the Really Olden Days, when you could buy something, choose “send” and have the store’s van deliver it.

Do you remember “Charge-a-plates”? Little metal thingies that resembled dogtags. The department stores used them in the 1950s.

I have a separate bank account, not linked to my other accounts. I keep a smallish amount of money in there for online use and other questionable purchases.

  • 12:33:39 pm on March 8, 2017 | 0 | # |

Yep, I’ll still stop at the bank and find out whether there are any other unauthorized charges and whether I can do anything about our now-closed account.

  • 12:31:55 pm on March 8, 2017 | 0 | # |

In the Olden Days, before MasterCard and Visa, all the stores, gas stations, etc. had their own credit cards. My mother had a wallet-full, so full that she had to use a rubber band to keep it closed. I urged her not to carry so many cards. She said, “But what if you need gas and it’s not that brand?”

So, then one day she stopped to say hello to her son at his workplace. She left her purse on the seat and the car doors unlocked. “I was only going to be in there for a minute!”

The police found the purse, minus the money and other valuables, in a dumpster a block away. I don’t know whether she was able to close all the accounts in time.

…and, sort of on another subject, what all the young people need to know:

Never give your boyfriend a nude picture of yourself, even if he promises to keep it private. The female marines are finding that out.

  • 12:22:07 pm on March 8, 2017 | 0 | # |

    See, *I* know the rules:

Never give your personal or financial information to anyone who calls or e-mails you, no matter who they are or what they want. Look up their phone number in the phone book or on your monthly statement, and call them.

    I’m not sure, about $1,500ish.

Well, it’s not a “detail”, it’s just the tiny section of the picture that shows me.

  • 12:08:31 pm on March 8, 2017 | 0 | # |

My picture is not tiny, unless you are referring to the detail where I am sitting in the front corner. No one would recognize me. I only know because that is my usual seat.

Truth is, I believe hubby is very intelligent. He has made a successful career and an excellent reputation among the Pittsburgh construction industry, in spite of his very serious deficiencies. I don’t know what’s wrong, but he is definitely not wired right.

  • 12:05:19 pm on March 8, 2017 | 0 | # |

I doubt that hubby will get his money back. I went to the bank last week to discuss it with them. They said he had to try directly with the people he paid. If they won’t give it back the bank will try, but if he doesn’t try first they can’t do it.

He called, got a voicemail runaround, couldn’t reach a human being, gave up.

If you really want to see band pictures, there are several on the various pages of our website.

  • 11:58:40 am on March 8, 2017 | 0 | # |

Hi, candancie. I don’t understand why the picture is missing. I can see it. I have always been able to see it.

It’s an old picture. Neither of the two directors which you cannot see are still active. One is dead, the other has multiple serious health issues and will probably not return to the band, although no one is saying that out loud :(

So, hubby got scammed last month by a fast-talking cold caller. He gave his credit card number and apparently has lost a lot of money.

Today, fortunately but belatedly, our timeshare company has sent out a warning to all their customers to beware of this scam. I printed it out and gave it to hubby. After long, deep thought he decided it would be a good idea to change our credit card number. Well, yeah.

I told him I would stop at the bank today and do that. He couldn’t wait. He clumsily did it by phone (because I wouldn’t). He thinks our new cards will arrive tomorrow. I doubt it.

This might be your last chance to see me with Community Band South. I am on the left (your left), in the 3rd row, at the front.

Brother is at the back, playing percussion accessories. He hits things and shakes things and makes various noises. You can see him – the bearded guy between the two women standing in back.

The reason I went there in the first place was because they have a free knife-sharpening service. I’d left some knives there and needed to pick them up.

After I finished with the shopping, and got everything loaded into my car, I had to come back in for a restroom stop. It’s a long drive to get home. At the last minute I realized that I’d forgotten to pick up the knives.

    Got ‘em. All is well.

Today was more fun and more of an adventure than yesterday. The New Horizons (tuba) band is not as difficult and still fun. Then, I had 3 errands planned all in the same direction and nowhere near home. It was basically a straight shot along the interstate, but I wasn’t paying attention and took my usual turnoff. Oops, wrong.

So, I decided to get off the interstate and take “Route 60″. Unfortunately, the road I took wasn’t Route 60, it was Noblestown Road. I had a long drive through a rural area and ended up somewhere I knew but not where I wanted to be. I did eventually reach my destination, but it took a while.

So, 2 quick errands and then on to the up-upscale supermarket. I had a bunch of coupons for that store, including “$7 off a $70 purchase”. Time to stock up. I started out, with calculator in hand to keep a running total. I put a bunch of stuff into my cart, then the dang calculator reset itself to 0. Do you see the problem? How am I going to know when I get to $70? I don’t want to go to the cash register with only $69 total, or $200 total.

Customer service told me to just go to the register, and if I was way over I could have her delete some things. I ended up with a $73 total, and just left the extra things for them to re-shelve. I felt bad about that, but apparently that’s what they wanted me to do.

    Good evening, everybody.

Hi, candancie. I’ve been hanging on to the band because, yes, I do have such a long history. Thing is, it used to be fun and it isn’t any more. All I do is sit there wishing I wasn’t there, and peeking at my watch to see when I can go home.

The founder director of the band was an amazing guy. I had the greatest respect for him. As we both got older, playing in the band got more difficult, but I resolved that I wouldn’t walk out on him. I’d stick with it as long as he was there.

He died a couple of months ago, so I’m released from my resolution, and I don’t particularly care for the new director. So, it’s time to leave. I think I’ll ease my way out, probably not quitting suddenly.

OK, gotta go. Get dressed. Put out birdseed. Drive to my other property and exchange vans (which will take a while). Start on my 1-hour trip. Stop at the convenience store to buy a sandwich….

Good morning, everybody. It’s my fault again. Hubby wants to know the section properties of aluminum channel.

  • 11:18:22 pm on March 6, 2017 | 0 | # |

Good evening, everybody. I made a decision tonight. I am going to quit the band. (The clarinet band, not the tuba band.) The music is too difficult, and my beloved director has died, and it’s no fun at all. All I do is sit and peek at my watch – “how long until I can go home?” I had thought I’d stay on until either the beginning or the end of summer, but tonight I realized I didn’t have to do that. So, a few more weeks, maybe next week, and I’m outta there.

I will miss it. I am a “charter member”, there for the first rehearsal when the band was formed 28 years ago, and for years I never missed a rehearsal unless I was out of town. But like I said, it’s too difficult and no fun any more.

  • 03:27:29 pm on March 6, 2017 | 0 | # |

So, I have just made an Executive Decision. I don’t have to go out if I don’t want to. The errands can wait until whenever.

I do have to go to band tonight.

He didn’t fix my icemaker, which no longer makes ice. It would help if I could find the owner’s manual for the fridge. I used to have one, and exchanged e-mails with a company employee about something else.

Yeah, I know. I could go online again…
